1. Tell them what you want to talk about.
  2. Tell them how you want to end the conversation.
  3. Get their buy in.

Example: Bob has been late twice in his first week.

  1. Tell them what you want to talk about.
    • "Bob, I want to talk with you about showing up to work on time."
  2. Tell them how you want to end the conversation.
    • "When we end this conversation, I want to know that you will show up on time and won't be late again."
  3. Get their buy in.
    • "If you're late again, you will need to find another place to work but as long as your on time, we want you to continue working with us. Does that sound good?"

Bob will repond to "Does that sound good" with either a "Yes" or a "No" Bob saying, "Yes" is the buy in. If Bob says, No" and quits. Good! You were clear and Bob knows he can't meet our standards.
